About Saki in Oyo State, Nigeria-Location
Sharki is a community located in Oyo State, Nigeria. Oyo State is one of the 36 states in Nigeria and is situated in the southwestern region of the country.
 
Geography
Sharki is situated in the tropical region of Nigeria, characterized by a tropical climate with two main seasons: the wet season and the dry season. The community is surrounded by lush vegetation and is close to several water bodies.
 
Population
The population of Sharki is predominantly made up of the Yoruba people, who are one of the largest ethnic groups in Nigeria. The community has a mix of rural and urban dwellers, with many residents engaged in farming, trading, and other occupations.
 
Economy
The economy of Sharki is primarily driven by agriculture, with many residents engaged in farming and livestock production. The community is also known for its vibrant marketplaces, where residents buy and sell goods such as foodstuffs, clothing, and household items.

The culture of Sharki is rich and diverse, with a strong emphasis on traditional values and customs. The community has a vibrant cultural scene, with many festivals and celebrations throughout the year, including the annual Egungun festival.
 
Challenges
Like many communities in Nigeria, Sharki faces several challenges, including:

SHUF 2017 Seminar on Childcare and Empowerment in Sharki Community
Background
In 2017, SHUF (Safeguard Humanity Foundation) organized a seminar on childcare and empowerment in the Sharki Community. The seminar aimed to promote awareness and understanding of childcare and empowerment issues in the community.

Seminar Objectives
The objectives of the seminar were:
1. Raise awareness: Raise awareness about the importance of childcare and empowerment in the Sharki Community.
2. Build capacity: Build the capacity of community members to provide quality childcare and support empowerment initiatives.
3. Promote community engagement: Promote community engagement and participation in childcare and empowerment efforts.

Seminar Program
The seminar program included:
1. Keynote speeches: Keynote speeches from experts in childcare and empowerment.
2. Panel discussions: Panel discussions on topics such as childcare, education, and economic empowerment.
3. Workshops: Workshops on childcare and empowerment, including hands-on training and activities.

Early marriage is completely discouraged, the girl child should be allowed to come of age and make her personal choice of the man she wishes to spend the rest of her life with

Child Labour, Early Marriage, and Neglect- Reasons for the 2017 Seminar at Sharki
Background
The seminar at Sharki was organized in response to the prevalence of child labour, early marriage, and neglect in the community. These issues were identified as major concerns affecting the well-being and development of children in the area.
 
Reasons for the Seminar
The seminar was convened to address the following reasons:
 1. Child labour: Many children in the Sharki Community were engaged in labour, depriving them of their right to education and a childhood.
2. Early marriage: Early marriage was a common practice in the community, leading to girls being forced into marriage at a young age, often resulting in early pregnancy and limited educational opportunities.
3. Neglect: Children in the community were often neglected, with many lacking access to basic necessities like healthcare, education, and emotional support.
 
Goals of the Seminar
The seminar aimed to:
 1. Raise awareness: Raise awareness about the issues of child labour, early marriage, and neglect in the Sharki Community.
2. Promote solutions: Promote solutions and strategies to address these issues and protect the rights of children.
3. Empower community members: Empower community members to take action and become involved in preventing child labour, early marriage, and neglect.
 
Expected Outcomes
The seminar was expected to lead to:

3. Development of solutions: Development of solutions and strategies to prevent child labour, early marriage, and neglect in the Sharki Community.

Solutions to Address Child Labour, Early Marriage, and Neglect in the Sharki Community
 Short-term Solutions:
1. Awareness campaigns: Organize awareness campaigns to educate community members about the negative effects of child labour, early marriage, and neglect.
2. Community engagement: Engage with community leaders and members to promote dialogue and encourage community-led initiatives to address these issues.
3. Support services: Provide support services, such as counseling, healthcare, and education, to children and families affected by child labour, early marriage, and neglect.
