Location: Enugu State, NigeriaÂ
Â
Introduction
Â
This report outlines the effective monitoring and resolution of a human rights violation case involving an elderly woman in Ebonyi State, who was subjected to oppression by her own biological son. Following a complaint lodged by her daughter, the Safeguard Humanity Foundation (SHUF) in collaboration with the National Human Right Commission, (NHRC) Abakaliki, Â Eboyi State, intervened promptly to assess the situation, facilitate a safe resolution, and implement measures to prevent any recurrence of abuse.
Â
In April 2025, SHUF received a report concerning an elderly woman, who was allegedly enduring emotional and physical oppression by her son. The complaint was brought to our attention by her concerned daughter, who feared for her mother’s safety, well-being and life. Â
Â
The reported circumstances included instances of verbal abuse, neglect, and coercive control exerted by the son, which led to a deterioration of the elderly woman’s mental and physical health.
Â
 Intervention Steps Taken by SHUF
Â
1. Initial Assessment:
Upon receiving the report, SHUF mobilized a team of qualified human rights advocates and social workers to conduct an immediate assessment of the situation. This included:
  – A thorough interview with the elderly woman to understand her experiences and needs.
  – Gathering insights from her daughter to gather a holistic understanding of the familial dynamics at play.
Â
2. Rescue Operations:
Recognizing the immediate threat to the woman’s safety, SHUF coordinated an intervention to ensure her protection. This involved:
  – Facilitating the temporary relocation of the elderly woman to a safe environment, free from her son’s influence, where she could begin to heal physically and mentally.
Â
3. Mediation and Reconciliation:
Following the rescue, SHUF took proactive steps to mediate discussions between the elderly woman and her son. This process included:
  – Engaging both parties in a dialogue aimed at fostering understanding and reconciliation. The discussions were led by trained mediators who created a safe space for both the mother and son to express their feelings.
  – Educating the son on the implications of his actions and providing him with resources to address his behaviour.
Â
4. Therapeutic Support:
To assist the elderly woman in her recovery, SHUF arranged for psychological counselling and support services to address the trauma she had experienced:
  – Ongoing therapy sessions were established to help her heal emotionally and regain confidence.
  – Regular check-ins were implemented to monitor her mental health and well-being during the reconciliation process.
Â
5. Family Support and Education:
To ensure a sustainable resolution and prevent future violations, SHUF provided both the elderly woman and her son with educational resources about elder rights and caregiving:
  – Conducted workshops focused on family dynamics, respect for elders, and healthy communication strategies.
  – Engaged local community leaders in conversations about the importance of protecting vulnerable individuals within families. Â
Â

Monitoring and Follow-Up
SHUF has instituted a structured follow-up plan to ensure ongoing support and evaluate the effectiveness of the reconciliation:
– Regular Visits: Our team conducts regular visits to the elderly woman to monitor her well-being and to assess the family dynamics.
– Feedback Mechanism: We have established a feedback mechanism to empower her and her daughter to report any concerns or issues promptly.
– Community Engagement: Local community leaders are engaged to promote a culture of respect towards the elderly and monitor family interactions.
Â
Conclusion
The case of the elderly woman in Ebonyi State has demonstrated the importance of quick intervention and the effectiveness of mediation in human rights violations involving domestic issues. SHUF’s commitment to human dignity extends beyond immediate rescue; we focus on reconciliation, education, and community support to ensure sustained change.
Â
With continued monitoring and support, we are hopeful that this family can heal and rebuild their relationship in a healthier, more respectful manner.
Â
Together, we can protect the rights of vulnerable individuals and build compassionate communities.
